Tips for Painting a Garage Floor

garage floor

Our last post provided tips on how to address spilling paint on carpet during a paint project. You won’t have that problem with today’s project …

The garage door forms part of exterior look of your house and you always try to inject your outdoors with a flavor of personality as it certainly increases the curb appeal of your home.

Also, it is significant that the garage door should match the architecture of the home as they are visible from the street and thus painting them to match the rest of the house is certainly a good idea!

Here are some tips to paint the garage door so that it doesn’t continue to clash with the style of your home.

Preparing the door:

Since the garage door has all the grime which it collects while fighting with hailstorms, rain, sun and all other sorts of weather, you have to take extra steps to prepare it for painting before you actually do it.

You might need a garden hose to rinse water and then clean the entire door first with an all-purpose cleaner.

You might also need to cover the floor of the garage so that your driveway is not impacted because of paint. Preparing the door will ensure that it will hold up the paint well.

Cover it up:

Paint goes everywhere even at those places where you don’t want it to go! Hence before you begin painting, make sure you have covered the handles, windows, trims and locks with the painter’s tape. This will protect your edges and these areas from getting painted for no reason!

Look for your timing:

Your idea of giving a facelift to your garage door is amazing but you need to decide on the timing wisely. You can’t plan to paint it on a rainy day and too sunny day is also not good as it can lead to formation of paint blisters.

So you need to choose a perfect day or set of days which are neither too hot nor too cold and are perfect for the painting! Start the process early in a day so that you have entire day to wrap it up in one day itself.

Choice of primer:

It is always advisable to apply primer before you paint but you also need to ensure that the primer is meant for outdoor use (it will then have better weather shield) and is suited for the surface and material of your door. Primer helps in retaining the shine of the door and is thus an important component of painting activity.

Focus on holes:

If the garage door has certain dents, scratches and holes then this is the best time to fill them up. This is because new paint will not hide these dents and would rather make them more visible and apparent.

Had garage door not been the one facing the street, it must have been the last thing at your house to paint! Jokes apart but the garage door of your home is exposed to all the elements of weather and thus a fresh coat of paint not only improves it appearance but also extend the life expectancy of the door.

Cleaning Paint Off Carpet

paint brushes

We have painted hundreds of rooms over the years and no matter how hard we try; we always spill paint on the carpet.

We place down drop cloths on the furniture and the carpet. We use newspapers to rest paint cans and roller trays on. It’s hopeless. Spilling paint on carpet just seems inevitable.

Does this happen to you too? The only good thing about it at this point is we have become very good at cleaning paint off of carpet. This means that the spill rarely results in a permanent stain now on the carpet.

Let’s share our tips on how remove paint stains from carpet:

The type of paint will determine the process for cleaning the stain off of the carpet. Here is the process for latex paint.

The first thing you need to do is to blot the spill with a damp cloth immediately after the spill occurs. Do not scrub the stain. This is a common mistake for not only paint stains. Homeowners will scrub liquid stains on carpet and end up causing a permanent stain in the process. Just blot the paint and do your best to absorb as much of the wet paint as possible.

The first step should remove the majority of the paint from the carpet but there will probably be some left over. For the remaining latex paint, mix a cup of warm water with dishwashing liquid and then blot the stain with the solution, starting from the outside of the stain toward the middle. This will remove the remnants of the paint spill. Then vacuum the area.

The steps to remove a water-based paint stain are similar to latex paint. You will first want to blot the paint spill as much as possible to remove the wet stain. Then mix warm water and dishwashing liquid together and repeat the process above.

If the paint is dry, you will need to moisten the spill with a handheld steamer or warm water and then gently scrape at the stain with a butter knife. Do not be aggressive as this will ruin the carpet similar to scrubbing a stain.

Oil paints will dry much faster than latex or water. You will need to act fast. Blot the spill and use the dishwashing solution second but the odds are the stain will have dried before you are able to remove all of it. Apply a handheld steamer to the surface of the carpet to wet and loosen the paint and then use a needle point to break apart the paint. Then vacuum the carpet after all of the oil paint is gone.

We have used all of these methods several times now with great success but none of the tips are a guarantee for cleaning paint off carpet. Every carpet fiber and stain is a little different.

You could need to hire a local carpet cleaner near your home to use their professional equipment to remove the paint and restore your carpet.

Call 811 Before You Dig!

shovel digging

You might be excited to get started on your landscaping project for your home but there is one thing you must do before you get started assuming you will need to dig during the project. You must call 811.This is very important and for your safety. There are millions of utility lines buried underground in the

U.S.A. Utility lines are underneath your driveway, your sidewalk, your garden and your porch. You have no way of knowing where they are and you should proceed carefully. You can reduce the risk of damaging an utility line or injuring yourself with a call to 811 beforehand.

You call 811 and it will reroute you to the local service center for your state. The operator will want to know information about your project, where you want to dig and a phone number to contact you with any additional questions.

811 then notifies local utility services about your intention to dig. It is then the responsibility of the utility provider to send out someone within 2-3 business days to mark the areas around your project where there are utility lines underneath.

After 2-3 business days, you should call 811 again and confirm that all of the utility providers in your neighborhood have either come and marked their lines or reported no lines near the area of your landscaping project.

Once all of the lines are marked, you should carefully dig around them. If there are several lines where you intended to complete your project, you will want to consider a different location for your landscaping project.

The process of calling 811 does slow down your timeline for being able to complete your DIY landscaping but safety always comes first. You could suffer a very serious injury if you hit electrical utility lines with a shovel or metal tool. You could also cause a power outage for your entire neighborhood which probably would irritate the homeowners near you.

We recommend you call 811 on Monday or Tuesday so that you can then start the project on Saturday after all of the lines are marked. This way you are not waiting for 811 to start or finish your project.

DIY Pegboard for Tools

handyman tools

This is an easy DIY project we recommend for all homeowners with a robust tool collection. You don’t want to lose your tools and you don’t want to waste time searching for them during a DIY project or home repair.

Today we will teach you hot to build a pegboard in your basement or garage to store and organize your tools. This project won’t require much time at all or many tools and you will reap the benefits for many years.

Let’s Begin …

First, use a tape measurer to measure the space on the wall in your basement or garage where you plan on hanging the pegboard. The measurements will be the size of the frame for the pegboard to sit in.

Purchase two pieces of plywood that are 2 ¾” wide and cut them down the center with a table saw and then cut them the size of the space you need for the frame.

If you don’t own a table saw you can request that the hardware store or lumberyard do this for you. You will also need to cut a center channel down each piece for the pegboard to rest in. Determine the depth of the channel based on how deep you need the pegboard to be in order to hang your tools on it.

You will also need to measure and cut a piece of pegboard with a table saw. The pegboard needs to fit within the plywood frame.

You should nail the two sides of the frame to the top piece of wood and then slide the piece of pegboard into the side and top channels of the wood. Then slide the bottom piece of the frame into the bottom of the pegboard and nail the bottom to both side pieces.

Cut four triangle pieces of plywood to fit into the corners on the back of the frame and two pieces of wood to sit in the center to stabilize the frame and hold the weight of the tools. You should screw the supports in from the front of the pegboard. This isn’t a project for aesthetics so don’t worry about the screws that will be visible from the front of the pegboard.

Then find studs on the wall of your garage or basement and drill screws into them to hang the frame on. Then purchase a pegboard storage set to strategically place throughout the board to hang your tools.

This project should only require 2-3 hours to complete. From then on, all of your tools will be easy to access and on display to impress other amateur handymen.

Types of Tiles for Your Home

marble tile

The three most common choices for flooring in a home or business are carpet, hardwood or tile or stone. More and more homeowners are removing their carpet to replace it with finished hardwood floors or tile floors.

Homeowners feel that tile is easier to maintain than both hardwood and carpet and offers a more modern appearance for their décor. Tile is also extremely durable and it offers several colors and styles to choose from. There are even health benefits to installing tile floor in your home as it is a great choice for allergy sufferers.

There are several different types of tile to choose from for your home:

The tile used for flooring needs to be extremely durable. The tile must withstand the constant weight of foot traffic as well as furniture and other heavier items on top of it for endless hours. This is especially true for tile floors near the entryways of your home or the tile floor in the kitchen around where meals are prepared and where refrigerators, stoves and dishwashers sit for several months or years.

Travertine tile is a great choice for flooring because it is extremely durable and very low-maintenance. Travertine tile is also an economical choice because it is not very expensive to install. Quartz is another good option since it is very low-maintenance and easy to clean and maintain.

Moisture-prone rooms in your home, such as kitchens or bathrooms, require tile that is slip-resistant and non-porous. You do not want your tile floor to lead to several slips, falls and injuries for you or your family or guests. You also do not want the tile to absorb water as this will corrode it and lead to deterioration.

Slate is a good choice because it is slip and stain-resistant. You might want to consider slate for the floor in your kitchen or around the sink area. Porcelain is another good choice because it is able to resist moisture. Homeowners often choose porcelain tiles for the floor in their bathroom around their shower and toilet.

You do not want to use mosaic tiles or glass tiles for floor for obvious reasons. These types of tile are best used for walls and decoration. You should also reserve ceramic tile and marble and granite for countertops opposed to flooring.

You can install tile floor much easier than hardwood floor too. The process requires thinset, grout and a wet saw and most amateur handyman are able to install tile in just 24-48 hours whereas we recommend hiring a professional for installing carpet or hardwood floor in your home.

How to Remove Carpet

how to remove carpet

Is it time for new carpet for your home?

If you are replacing your carpet because it has several stains or appears dirty, we first recommend hiring a carpet cleaning Fort Wayne service to try to remove the stains and renew the color and the beauty. Professionals are often able to remove old carpet stains and deeper dirt that vacuuming cannot. It is worth a try because the cost of new carpet is not cheap.

If you are replacing your carpet because it is too old or you are simply interested in a new color or style, then you might consider removing the carpet on your own to save some costs. To remove carpet is an easy DIY home improvement project you can complete in half a day.

Here is how to remove carpet:

In preparation of removing your carpet from your floor, be sure to wear shoes or boots. Don’t attempt this project barefoot or in socks because there are tacks, nails and staples beneath the surface that could hurt you.

Step 1:

Remove the baseboards or molding around the exteriors of the wall-to-wall carpet. You can remove the baseboards or molding using a putty knife or a flathead screwdriver but be careful not to scratch the wall or the baseboard or remove paint.

Step 2:

Now find a razor blade and cut a starting seam in the carpet. Be careful not to cut too deep in order to preserve the quality of the floor beneath the carpet. This is especially true if you are planning to convert to hardwood flooring and want to use the hardwood floor beneath the carpet.

You can then start to pull up the carpet from the seam. Continue to cut the carpet in small portions for easier removal and organization of the pieces of old carpet.

Each time you remove a small portion of the carpet, you can roll it up and transfer it to your garage or to your garbage can or garbage pickup. You might need to load it into your car or truck and take it to your local dump for disposal.

Step 3:

Now pry away the carpet pad beneath the carpet. You will not need this if you are converting to hardwood floor. If you are purchasing new carpet for your home, you will want to purchase a new pad too. Invest in a quality carpet pad as it is important for the resiliency and quality of the carpet during its lifetime in your home.

Step 4:

Then it is time to remove the staples and tacks from the floor. This part of the project is the most difficult and most time consuming. You will want to use a pliers or handheld tool to pry the nails and staples out. You won’t be able to complete the job without a tool.

Your knees and back might start to hurt during this part of the project. Stop for breaks from time to time in order to avoid injury.

Step 5:

Remove the tack strips along the wall using a hammer and a pry bar or crowbar. Be careful not to scratch the wall or the wood floor beneath the tack strip.

Double check your work to ensure there are no more tacks or staples in the hardwood floor. This is especially important if you are buffing the floor and refinishing it for your home.

That is how to remove carpet. With the old carpet gone, it will be easier for the Fort Wayne installation company to install the new carpet and it will be cheaper for you too!

How to Fix a Running Toilet

fix toilet

There is nothing more annoying than the sound of a running toilet in your home. The most common cause for a running toilet is a broken flapper in the toilet tank. The good news is that even the most amateur repairman can replace a broken flapper and fix a running toilet in no time:

Visity your local hardware store and purchase a universal flapper. Before you leave your home look for the brand and model of your toilet. The companies that sell new toilet flappers design them to be universal but it can’t hurt to verify the brand and model and ensure the new flapper you purchase will work for your toilet.

The packaging of the flapper should list what brands and models of toilets it can be used for. The number on brand of new flappers is Korky. Korky products are very reliable and come with a 5-year warranty.

You can visit their website at before you leave for the hardware store and find the model of toilet flapper you should purchase when you arrive at the hardware store.

Now that you have purchased a new toilet flapper you can start the process of replacing the old one from your toilet. First, turn off the water. There will be a knob near the bottom of the toilet attached to piping coming out of the wall. Turn the water all of the way off.

Then flush the toilet. This will drain the tank of water before you attempt to work in the tank and replace the flapper.

Disconnect the lift chain from the flush lever and then pull the old flapper off.

Now line up the new flapper over the flush valve and connect the new lift chain, leaving only a little bit of slack from the top of the flapper. You only want between two or three chain links from the top of the flapper to the lift chain. Too much and it will be too lose and continue to run.

Once you’ve set the chain length to the appropriate length you can turn the water back on. Turn the knob behind the toilet back on all of the way. This will fill the toilet. Now flush the toilet a couple of times to ensure that the toilet isn’t running anymore.

If the toilet is done running, then you have fixed your running toilet. If it hasn’t fixed the problem, then continue to test the length of the chain.

If the toilet continues to run then you might need to replace the entire toilet kit. This includes the flush valve too. This repair isn’t too difficult either. It is just a few more steps. The good news is that the hardware store often sells complete toilet kits that include the new flapper and flush valve together.

Still have questions on how to fix a running toilet? Feel free to contact us at anytime and we will do our best to answer your home repair questions.
