Call 811 Before You Dig!

shovel digging

You might be excited to get started on your landscaping project for your home but there is one thing you must do before you get started assuming you will need to dig during the project. You must call 811.This is very important and for your safety. There are millions of utility lines buried underground in the

U.S.A. Utility lines are underneath your driveway, your sidewalk, your garden and your porch. You have no way of knowing where they are and you should proceed carefully. You can reduce the risk of damaging an utility line or injuring yourself with a call to 811 beforehand.

WHAT DOES 811 DO?

You call 811 and it will reroute you to the local service center for your state. The operator will want to know information about your project, where you want to dig and a phone number to contact you with any additional questions.

811 then notifies local utility services about your intention to dig. It is then the responsibility of the utility provider to send out someone within 2-3 business days to mark the areas around your project where there are utility lines underneath.

After 2-3 business days, you should call 811 again and confirm that all of the utility providers in your neighborhood have either come and marked their lines or reported no lines near the area of your landscaping project.

Once all of the lines are marked, you should carefully dig around them. If there are several lines where you intended to complete your project, you will want to consider a different location for your landscaping project.

The process of calling 811 does slow down your timeline for being able to complete your DIY landscaping but safety always comes first. You could suffer a very serious injury if you hit electrical utility lines with a shovel or metal tool. You could also cause a power outage for your entire neighborhood which probably would irritate the homeowners near you.

We recommend you call 811 on Monday or Tuesday so that you can then start the project on Saturday after all of the lines are marked. This way you are not waiting for 811 to start or finish your project.
